Making CMMI® practical - beyond systems and software
No-one working to contract for paying customers can afford to be unaware of the dangers of process-related risk.
CMMI® is well proven within systems and software engineering. But CMMI® offers so much more. With its robust concepts of process capability and organisational maturity, CMMI® offers powerful ways of addressing process-related risk within dynamic business organisations well outside the realm of systems and software.
The approach described builds on the ideas set out in ISO 15504:4 which describe the process-related risk associated with every CMMI® Capability Level.
For several years QinetiQ have been using process-related risk to challenge participants on our internal CMMI® training courses; this has been particularly successful since delegates can readily relate the CMMI® principles to their own personal experiences. More recently, we have extended these ideas to more practical levels by focussing on process-related risk at work practice level.
All types of risk should be considered in terms of impact and probability. Practices should not be implemented simply to meet a CMMI® requirement, but rather in a thoughtful and systematic way that counters practical process-related risk in a manner proportionate to the business needs of the organisation.
The approach to be described employs consensus-forming techniques to identify, agree and document, within any application domain and for each CMMI® practice:
· What the CMMI® model practice means
· What process-related risk, or pitfall, the practice seeks to avoid in the software and systems domains
· What practical form the pitfall takes in the given application domain
· How significant the risk is in terms of impact and probability
· What practical actions need to be taken to counter the risk
The proposed presentation will include specific examples involving Level 2 and Level 3 Process Areas.Speakers
